Memory pool

So what makes a song from this era important? I could argue that all songs are sublime compositions or that the videos are ground breaking, but it wouldn't be true. Closer to the truth would be: "because I think so".

Get your daily 80's fix and, if you like, share some of your memories with the rest of us.

See you!

would appreciate if you get in touch with me.

The Specials - A Message To You Rudy

Year: 1979

Ska music at its best! Strictly speaking, this song by The Specials does not qualify because it was released 1979. However, it was played for several years during the early eighties and most important: it is a cool song covered by several artist later on. For example by Daddy Boastin with Värsting.

OMD - If You Leave

Year: 1986

This song by OMD was the theme of the movie Pretty in Pink, starring Molly Ringwald (up-and coming at the time). The song itself is typical for OMD: sentimental, melodic and makes a perfect match to the film. Sweet!

Les Rita Mitsouko - Marcia Baila

Year: 1985

Liking Les Rita Mitsouko was my passport into the alternative music community (which I sort of followed since then, not that is it particularly obvious from the contents of this blog). Of course there was a girl involved too.. I had a huge crush on her because she was totally far out in every sense. Something I found very attractive. We never got together, though. Last I heard she was making a living letting rich people primal scream on her kitchen floor.

Landscape - Norman Bates

Year: 1980

A true paraphrase of the Hitchcock classic Psycho with the band in supporting and leading roles, flanked by a spitting image of Janet Leigh, but with sexier shoes...
Landscape might be more famous for their hit Einstein A Go-Go, but in my view this song is waaay cooler.

Kim Wilde - You Came

Year: 1988

I am back from a long sleep, inspired by Kim Wilde re-emerging on the scene together with Fibes, oh Fibes! the other day.
Similar to Kim herself, the song You Came is a beauty - although I suspect that she wouldn't look as stunning in those high-waistline trousers as she did 20 years ago.

Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days

Year: 1984

Sometimes a cool groove is all it takes to get attached to a song. This is indeed true for Dance Hall Days by Wang Chung. I never understood the meaning of the band name, but that didn't stop me from playing this song in an annoyingly high volume in my Sony Walkman Sports while i rode my skateboard (a SIMS wooden board with red semi-soft wheels) across town.

The Jam - Town Called Malice

Year: 1982

Even though I am not a dancer, this hit by The Jam always makes me wanna jump up and take on the dance floor. If I am not mistaking I believe I did at some parties during the 80's (against better judgement). The front man, Paul Weller, was fostered in the punk ideals but obviosly had a soft spot for catchy R&B tunes. A great mix of styles. Paul later on formed The Style Council, but that was not nearly as good a band.
